In this class on lyric poetry, students will read a wide assortment of poets whose works deal with love, immortality, creation, and image. Students will learn some of the basic terms and mechanics of lyric poetry, as well as how reading such allows us to participate in a community of mankind which extends beyond our current day. By the end of the course, students will have gained new insight into the importance of poetry, which has been lost in our modern culture.
Some of the poets students can anticipate reading in this class will be: W.B. Yeats, Robert Frost, Rainer Maria Rilke, G.K. Chesterton, William Shakespeare, and J.R.R. Tolkien, in addition to old Anglo-Saxon poetry, Psalms, and a number of essays by academics and critics.
